IBM, Microsoft, and Amazon cited the use of face recognition under racial profiling. In a surprising statement, the CEO of IBM Arvind Krishna calls US Congress to endorse the reforms for providing racial justice as well as combat systemic racism. He further announced that IBM is getting out of the business of facial recognition.
In addition to the IBM decision, Amazon also announced and applies a one-year suspension of police force use of facial recognition software. Amazon also wants the US Congress to pass a strong regulation for this.
Microsoft President Brad Smith said in a statement, “We will not sell facial-recognition technology to police departments in the United States until we have a national law in place, grounded in human rights that will govern this technology.”
The announcement of IBM was a big initiative. Microsoft and Amazon also supported and announced it. This is a significant moment, as three giants are declaring a worldwide recognized technology TOXIC. This is one of the biggest moment for machine learners, police authorities as well the ministers.
In the fast-growing technological world, new inventions are coming after every certain time. Taking off the facility means this is a step back. This technology is widely available and recognized in different countries worldwide.
